Euro's Take Star Crossed Victories
Elite Men's Report
Heule Stabs the Beast in an "old school Euro-cross race"
Spectators headed for shelter in the beer garden as the elite men's field started in the rain at FSA Star Crossed. The field attracted a couple of national champs (Ryan Trebon and Tim Johnsen - USA, Christian Heule - Switzerland) along with UCI podium placer Jonathan Page and last year's winner Jeremy Powers for the North American Cyclocross Trophy series kick-off, September 19th in Redmond, Washington. The course lay out featured long grassy straight-aways with riders going in and out of the Marymoor velodrome. As the weather turned for the worse, bike handling took precedence over power as the off-camber turns slickened with rain. Tim Johnson (Cannondale) went down on the first lap and soon an elite formed: Page, Trebon, Heule, Troy Wells, and Andy Jacques-Maynes (Bissell) and Jeremy Powers. Crashes and bad corners would whittle the group down but riders kept fighting to get back to the lead group, with Trebon and Page taking turns on the front and attacking. Heule hit the velodrome first, holding off Page and Powers on the finishing straight. Trebon was fourth and Andy Jacques-Maynes rounded out the top five. Heule won the race back in 2007 and was pleased to repeat, despite the condition of the course.
Elite Women's Report
Wyman takes the win, Sue Butler 2nd and newly un-retired Allison Dunlap 3rd
The rain started shortly after the UCI women's field took off at FSA Star Crossed and Kona's Helen Wyman began to rain all over the field. The British Champion, currently ranked eighth the world, rode away from a top-notch women's field including last year's winner MonaVie Cannodale's Sue Butler and never looked back. After the race, Wyman noted that the course felt similar to the European races, which clearly worked to her advantage. A chase group consisting of Butler, Allison Dunlap (Luna) and Alison Sydor (Rocky Mountain) tried to give Wyman a run for her money but the Brit. Butler dangled with the lead chase group, having trouble with her new pedals, but managed to power through on the home straight away to take second ahead of Dunlap.

Press Release - Rad Racing GP
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
2009 Rad Racing GP of Cyclocross
Presented by Kona and Bradson Technology Professionals
World class racing in Lakewood, WA will feature top national and international riders
Olympia, Wash. – Rad Racing NW/Hagens Berman is proud to host the Rad Racing GP of Cyclocross Presented By Kona and Bradson Technology Professionals on September 20th at Fort Steilacoom Park in Lakewood, Wash. This world-class cyclocross event will feature top riders from around the USA and the world in what has become one of the great races to open the U.S. cyclocross season each year.
Cyclocross, described by some as “the toughest hour in cycling,” is an on-road and off-road cycling discipline held on a looped circuit of approximately 1-2 miles. Cyclocross racers navigate mud, sand, pavement, grass, gravel, pasture and mulch. When the terrain is too steep to ride, riders dismount, shoulder their bikes and run.
The Rad Racing GP will be hosted by top junior development squad Rad Racing NW/Hagens Berman, a group dedicated to teaching young people life lessons through the sport of cycling and to developing top regional, national and international junior cyclists. One hundred percent of proceeds from the race will go directly to the Rad Racing NW Junior Development Cycling Team.
For the 2009 edition, Kona Bicycles returns as a major supporter of the event and the Rad Racing team. “Rad Racing is one of our top programs, they are doing great things for junior cycling, we are proud to be associated with them and we are happy to support their efforts by sponsoring this top notch race,” - Dan Gerhard of Kona Bicycles.
Northwest company Bradson Technology Professionals headlines the group of new sponsors to the event. For 30 years Bradson Technology Professionals has been serving customers in the Pacific Northwest and beyond with technical consulting services. Bradson has offices in Seattle and Portland and is truly proud of their Northwest roots and location. "Bradson Technology Professionals is excited to sponsor such a great Cyclocross event and be associated with a top notch youth program.” - Joel Burklund, Director of Professional Services at Bradson.
Other new sponsors for 2009 bring some exciting features to the limelight.
In the Cannondale/SRAM “Pit-zone” mechanics will work feverishly to keep riders on track with their equipment. Riders who do not have a mechanic, spare wheels, or a spare bike can take advantage of SRAM neutral support. SRAM will provide help to anybody and everybody who needs it at the venue.
Cannondale jumps into the NW cross scene with sponsorship of the 2009 event. Along with local dealer “Old Town Bicycles”, Cannondale will be providing pit sponsorship with partner SRAM.
During the course of the weekend, raffle tickets will be sold; two lucky winners will each win a Cannondale cadd9 Cyclcoross frame. “It’s a winning situation all the way around, we get to participate in a great event that was won last year by Cannondale rider Tim Johnson, we can contribute great raffle prizes, and we help the future of cycling by supporting Rad Racing’s efforts”. – Brian Pickering, Cannondale Bicycles.
TRP Brakes joins the fun with the “TRP Brake-check”, a high speed decent into a hairpin corner that will test the limits of any set of binders. Riders will be competing for TRP brake-sets as prizes for many categories.
Returning to the race course this year will also be the “Herriott Sports Performance Barriers” where fans can see the art of high speed Cyclocross dismounting and remounting at it’s finest. There may even be several “bunnyhoppers” in the mix.
Rounding out the course-features is the Legendary “Kona Knapp-Time Run Up”, 80 meters of the most thigh burning, lung searing, longest and steepest run up in the country. This feature is what Steilacoom is known for and in 2009 it won’t disappoint. Love it or hate it, you have to race it at least once.
Race Fans will watch over 400 top competitors, including 2008 US National Champion Ryan Trebon (Kona). Trebon and his trusty teammate Barry Wicks will have to contend with 2008 Rad Racing GP Champion Tim Johnson and his Cannondale/Cyclcocrossworld.com teammates Jeremy Powers and Jamey Driscoll. If that were not enough, 3-time US National Champion and 2007 World Championship Silver Medalist Jonathon Page will be making his first appearance at the Rad Racing GP.
Stepping into the Elite Category this year will be current U23 National Champion Nick Weighall (California Giant). Weighall is a Rad Racing NW Alumni who dominated the US U23 ranks last season winning the overall USGP title, and capping it off with the National title last December in Kansas City. With a new sponsor and a greater level of support Weighall is super motivated to make his mark in the Elite ranks.
On the women’s side Alison Dunlap (Luna) makes her return to International Cyclcocross at the weekends events. Alison is a former World Champion and Olympic Team member on the mountain bike, in Cyclocross she is a former 5-time national champion and a winner of the Rad Racing event in 2002. Also confirmed is Great Britain’s Helen Wyman (Kona), 5th at last years World Championships, and currently ranked #6 in the world.
Rad Racing GP joins “Starcrossed” scheduled September 19th, as the opening 2 rounds of the North American Cyclcocross Trophy national series. The series joins the top cyclocross races from coast to coast in a series designed to attract top talent. Amateur riders will be able to race the same course as the professional as they battle for points in the Seattle area based MFG Series.
One more great feature to the weekend is a free Cyclocross clinic. Herriott Sports Performance in conjunction with Lake Washington Velo and RAD Racing present a FREE cyclo-cross clinic featuring Jonathan Page and Alison Dunlap. This is a unique opportunity to take instruction from two of the most accomplished cyclo-cross racers in American history. The clinic will be held at the King County's Marymoor Velodrome / Star Crossed course in Redmond from 5 30- 6:45 pm on September 18th. Look for the HSP tent where you can stow bags and extras. No sign up or registration required, just show up on time and be prepared to learn from the best. For questions about this event contact Herriott Sports Performance at: 206-816-3436

Press Release Number One
August 18, 2009 - Full Speed Ahead Star Crossed amplified by Redline, the nation's first twilight cyclocross race, is returning on September 19th to King County's Marymoor Park in Redmond, WA. Star Crossed kicks off the US 'cross season for the 8th consecutive year under the bright lights of the Marymoor Velodrome. This year Star Crossed will be the first UCI Cyclocross race in the US and the first race in the North American Cyclocross Trophy (NACT) which includes ten races in five cities in the US and Canada. With the growing popularity of cyclocross in the United States and the already proven formula of great racing, a spectator-friendly course, a beer garden along with tasty eats, and DJ-spun music should mean another fun-filled day for spectators and a successful and record breaking year for this event.
FSA Star Crossed partners with Rad Racing Gran Prix on September 20th to complete the first weekend of the NACT. While FSA Star Crossed has been know as a party with a bike race, Rad Racing GP has been pure classic cross since 2002 with its 80 meter run-up and storied roster of champs including Erwin Vervecken, Danielle Pontoni, Christian Huele, Ryan Trebon, Alison Dunlap, and Tim Johnson. Jim Brown and his Rad Racing NW junior development program have presented cyclocross on the legendary Steilacoom course for the past 7 years. Rad Racing GP provides a great contrast to Starcrossed with high speeds, tactical racing, and brutal run-up.
Already confirmed for FSA Star Crossed and Rad Racing GP are current US National Cyclocross and NACT Champion, Ryan Trebon (Kona) and 2007 World Cyclocross Silver Medalist, Jonathan Page (Planet Bike). FSA Star Crossed and Rad Racing GP 2008 champs Jeremy Powers and Tim Johnson will again team up for Cannondale / CyclocrossWorld to defend their respective titles in 2009. Also joining Power and Johnson from Cannondale / CyclocrossWorld is Jamey Driscoll, silver medalist at last year’s US National Championship. Christian Huele (Rendementhypo), current Swiss Cyclocross Champion, will also make his return to the Pacific Northwest in an attempt to gain double wins at these pair of races as he did in 2007.
In the women’s category five-time US Cyclocross Champion, Alison Dunlap (Luna) will make her return from retirement at FSA Star Crossed. Meeting Dunlap at the start line will be 2009 Star Crossed winner and Single Speed World Champion, Sue Butler (Monavie-Cannondale) and British National Cyclocross Champion and #8 in the World, Helen Wyman (Kona). 2008 Rad Racing GP winner, Wendy Simms will be spending the weekend cheering for her husband in the Master’s races as she is soon expecting a newborn baby.
Long time sponsor Full Speed Ahead has returned to the event as title sponsor "Star Crossed has been a fixture in the northwest cyclocross scene and it keeps getting bigger and better. It's a great kick-off for the national season. They have created a great vehicle to get our name and our new products out in the spotlight for the season," states Max Ralph, Marketing Manager FSA.
Redline Bicycles will be pumping up their support of Star Crossed this year with full support of a venue-wide sound system to keep the crowds fully informed throughout the night as well as kicking in generous prizes for racers and spectators alike. “Redline is once again pleased to be a sponsor of Star Crossed. As a leader in cyclocross bicycle innovation, being part of Star Crossed has always been a great place for us to showcase our products to current and future cyclocross racers,” said Tim Rutledge of Redline Bicycles.
Also coming aboard this year are Herriott Sports Performance as title sponsor of the Elite Women and Cascade Bicycle Studio as title sponsor of the always-entertaining Cat 3 Men. Cascade Bicycle Studio will offer the winner of the Men’s Category 3 race a fully custom Seven Cycles Tsunami Steel frame, with the option of the limited edition Star Crossed glow-in-the-dark paint scheme. The additional of these two local sponsors allow the continued strong support of both the grassroots and elite categories.
Deschutes Brewery has returned as the official beer garden sponsor providing a variety of local brews. The event will also feature a live DJ sponsored by Zune, free spectator door prizes and giveaways including a Redline frameset. A variety of great food will also be provided at the event by local vendors. Other sponsors and contributors to the event include, De La Paz Coffee, Sonadei, Chef’n, NOS, Smith , Black Diamond, Cyclocross Magazine and The Sports Medicine Clinic.
FSA Star Crossed and Rad Racing Gran Prix will also be apart of “Three Perfect Days” from September 18th – 20th with the addition of the Herriott Sports Performance Cyclocross Clinic on September 18th at the FSA Star Crossed course. This free clinic will feature instruction and course reconnaissance with Jonathan Page, second 2007 World Cyclocross Championship, and Alison Dunlap, 2001 World Mountain Bike Champion. "Not only are these two racers some of the best in the country, having two events of this caliber back to back is a great way for seasoned and beginner races to kick off the season. Having Alison and Jonathan on hand to share their experience at a free clinic the night before Star Crossed is a huge bonus and a unique opportunity for anyone interested in learning more about the art of racing cross," notes Todd Herriott.

North American Cyclocross Trophy Announces 2009 Schedule
Series Expands North of the Border to Canada
Coming off of a strong first year that saw series champions Ryan Trebon and Georgia Gould capture the individual titles, as well as the coveted “NACT champions belts,” the North American Cyclocross Trophy announced its 2009 schedule with expansion to Canada.
The 2009 season will include 10 events:
• Star Crossed on September 19 (Seattle. WA)
• RAD Racing Gran Prix on September 20 (Seattle, WA)
• The Erdinger Gran Prix of Gloucester on October 3-4 (Gloucester, MA)
• Toronto International Cyclocross on October 17-18 (Toronto, ON)
• Blue Sky Velo Cup on October 31 (Longmont, CO)
• The Boulder Cup on November 1 (Boulder, CO)
• Whitmore’s Landscaping Super Cross Cup on November 21-22 (Southampton, NY)
The addition of Canada’s most prestigious cyclocross race to the NACT schedule makes it a truly North American series. Toronto International Technical Director Scott Doel commented, “Our race has experienced tremendous growth in the last 5 years, and that's evident by the depth and talent of the competitors involved. We're honored to a part of this exciting North American series.”
The short-term vision for NACT expansion was about adding a high quality event while achieving a true continental presence. In the long term as cyclocross continues to grow in the US and Canada and fields become deeper and deeper at the top the NACT can see expansion to comprehensive pro tour. “We would love to see the sport get to a place where additional dates are supporting in the U.S. in the Southeast, Midwest and California and well as Western Canada,” remarked Brook Watts of The Boulder Cup.
Myles Romanow, series founder and Whitmore’s Landscaping Super Cross race director, fully embraces this vision for the future, “Cross is experiencing explosive growth in America, and it's only a matter of time before it attracts mainstream media attention and is embraced by more than cycling fans. The dynamic racing and fun atmosphere at the races is ideally suited for the average public.”
The North American Cyclocross Trophy, created in 2008, is comprised of “the classic cyclocross races” of North America. Each race on the tour has a long history and represents the essence of the sport. Overall series prizes totaled over $7,000 in addition to daily prize totals making it the richest cyclocross series outside of Europe.
Buchanan promises additional announcements during the coming off-season. “We’re adding some event elements that should bring additional excitement to both spectators and racers.”

Course Revision
Rich McClung revised the course for '08 earlier in the summer with the goal of maintaining the spectator friendly features while adding a functional double pit. Three nights ago he woke up in the middle of the night and realized he had got the pit backwards. Oops, I thought I was the only one that mixed up my right with my left. Check out the revision, looks great.

Press Release #1
Star Crossed: The First and Premier Nightime Cyclocross Event is Now the Official Opener Of the North American Cyclocross Trophy
Full Speed Ahead and Gerk’s Ski and Cycle Return As Co-Title Sponsors.
Foundation Bank signs on as Elite Race sponsor
August 18, 2008 - Full Speed Ahead Star Crossed presented by Gerk's Ski and Cycle , the nation's first twilight cyclocross race, is returning on September 20th to King County's Marymoor Park in Redmond, WA. Star Crossed kicks off the US 'cross season for the 7th consecutive year under the bright lights of the Group Health Velodrome. This year Star Crossed will be the first UCI level race in the US and the first race in the new North American Cyclocross Trophy (NACT) that spans the entire United States. Inclusion in the tour and our already proven formula of great racing, spectator friendly course, beer garden, and music should add up to another successful and record breaking year for this event.
Money and international prestige are the foundation of the NACT Trophy, which was conceived from the start as a professional series. “Top racers are interested in two things, money and points; and we’ve got more of both of them than anybody else in North America,” said Myles Romanow, long time promoter of cyclocross in the upscale Hamptons. “It’s August and right now the series is already committed to race prizes in excess of $40,000 cash – plus appearance fees and an additional $7,000 in year-end cash bonuses for the top three season finishers in both the men’s and women’s divisions.
Already confirmed for Star Crossed is Olympic competitor Adam Craig who is set to take a shot at bringing home the gold on August 23rd. Also confirmed to attend is current National Cyclocross National Champion Tim Johnson, former National Champion Ryan Trebon and his dangerous teammate Barry Wicks. In the women’s category you will have several big hitters from around the nation such as Wendy Simms who won Star Crossed in 2006 and placed 6th overall at the 2007 World Championships and local series rockstar Kristi Berg.
Local sponsor Gerk's Ski and Cycle are also returning for the second consecutive year. "We had a great time at the event and were impressed with the course and crowds and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be a part of what seems like an end of summer tradition” says owner Brian Gierke "We are making a strong commitment to cyclocross and it's great to see bikes we sell in action!"
Also coming aboard this year is Foundation Bank as the presenting sponsor of the elite races. There sponsorship helps add additional funds to the elite races and helps us attract and even higher level of competition. Foundation Bank is a locally-owned, full-service, Washington State chartered commercial bank, offering a wide array of individually designed commercial credit and deposit products for Seattle area businesses and professionals.
Deschutes Brewery has returned as the official beer garden sponsor providing a variety of local brews. The event will also feature a live DJ sponsored by Zune, free spectator raffles and giveaways including a Ridley Cyclocross frameset, Redline Framesets and other prizes. Food will also be provided at the event by FrankFurter and Jamba Juice. Other sponsors and contributors to the event include Specialized, De La Paz, Herriot Sports Performance, Cycle University, Sonadei, NOS energy drink, and others.

North American Cyclocross Trophy Design Contest
Submissions Now Being Accepted for Design of Cyclocross’ Future Icon
August 4, 2008 (Seattle, Washington) The promoters of the North American Cyclocross Trophy are turning to the cyclocross community to design the inaugural series trophy for the Elite Men and Women. The community that supports and loves cyclocross in North America is, at its core, creative and interested in giving to the sport. This design contest for the inaugural series trophy is an opportunity for an interested artist to express the essence of cyclocross in what will become the top prize in North American Cyclocross.
The NACT will be accepting design concepts until September 1, 2008. Sketch it, explain it, video it, whatever it takes to convince us you got the right design. Please explain the medium and scale of your creation in your submission. We’ll argue about which design is best for a week and name a winning on September 8, 2008.
The NACT will provide $250 toward materials. The selected artist will donate their labor. The two trophies must be completed in time to ship to the series final in Southampton, NY the weekend of November 22nd and 23rd.

Star Crossed Joins New National Series
American Cyclocross just got bigger and richer, and America will never be the same. So say the promoters of eight of the biggest and well-known international cyclocross races on the American calendar, who have dropped a bombshell by forming an eight-race, coast-to-coast series with $7,000 in year-end cash bonuses. The North American Cyclocross Trophy Points Championship is scheduled to begin this fall and includes such notable races as FSA Star Crossed, Rad Racing GP Presented by Kona and FSA, Gran Prix of Gloucester, Boulder Cup, and the Whitmore’s Landscaping Super Cross Cup. All eight races are UCI sanctioned and already appear on the 2008-2009 UCI calendar.
Promoters of the series stress that this is a concrete, guaranteed-to-happen series. According to RAD Racing GP’s Jim Brown, “The series is made up of races with a proven track record. They are the classic cyclocross races in North America. The races are already on the UCI calendar, the financial backing for the series is already in place and the advertising has already been negotiated.” Brook Watts of Boulder Cup puts it a little more colorfully, “This isn’t one of those outrageous pie-in-the-sky plans that gets announced at InterBike and never materializes. I don’t think anybody’s ever put together a National Series (in America) made up completely of successful already-existing races. The plans for the North American Cyclocross Trophy aren’t contingent on anything. It’s ready to go right now. The series begins at the FSA Star Crossed on September 20, and it will have more prize money and more UCI points than any cyclocross series in North America.”
Money and international prestige are the foundation of the NACX Trophy, which was conceived from the start as a professional series. “Top racers are interested in two things, money and points; and we’ve got more of both of them than anybody else in North America,” said Myles Romanow, long time promoter of cyclocross in the upscale Hamptons. “It’s only July, and right now the series is already committed to race prizes in excess of $40,000 cash – plus appearance fees and an additional $7,000 in year-end cash bonuses for the top three season finishers in both the men’s and women’s divisions. That’s all cash, not merchandise. And we also offer more UCI points than any other series in America. The Trophy offers more UCI points than any series in the world outside of Europe.”
Cyclocross in America has experienced extraordinary growth in the past decade. Nobody has had such long-standing and close-up perspective of that growth as Paul Boudreau, promoter of the Gran Prix of Gloucester in Massachusetts. Affectionately nicknamed the “New England Worlds”, Gloucester has become one of those venues, like Wimbledon or Augusta, which defines its sport. When asked how he expects the NACX Trophy Series to benefit his race and the sport in general, Boudreau just shrugged and replied in typically minimalist New England fashion, “The classic races. The trophy. The prize worth winning. How could it not be great?”
